Tips for applicants
We receive many applications. Do your best to be ahead of the rest...
- First - Ask yourself - Do you want a job? No - Really. Do you? Why? It is important to think about these questions and know the answers. We will ask in the interview. Are you looking to save money for college? Meet new people in the area? Gain experience on a team and have some leadership roles? Are you only applying because your parents want you to get a job?
- Please make sure that your schedule allows you to make the commitment needed to have a job. We need employees for evening and weekend hours. If your schedule only allows you to work from 3-6 on a Tuesday and 11-1 on Sunday morning, then you are probably not going to get a call for an interview. This applies to the school session and summer as well, if you play both a fall and spring sport and you are in a club sport during the summer - then you really are not going to be available to work. Be honest about your availability, but understand that if you have very limited availability you will not be asked to come interview.
- Use your best penmanship on your application. Do not have your parent or someone else fill your application out. Yes - we can tell.
- Complete the entire application. Leaving things blank can be perceived as a reflection of how you may perform on the job. There is a section for comments/other info - use this to sell us on why we need to hire you. Tell us about yourself or things that would make you a great employee.
- Hand in your own application! Do not have your mom/dad hand in your application. (This is perhaps the easiest way NOT to be considered - any applications handed in by someone other than the person who is applying are thrown in the trash). When you hand in your application ask if a manager or one of the owners is there and hand it to them and introduce yourself! This is a great way to make yourself stand out and it also gives you an opportunity to be bold and say "I'm turning in an application and wondering when would be a good time to come in for an interview?"
- Follow up after you've submitted the application. (Be persistent. Show that you really want the job). Call and follow-up. Leave your name; ask for a call back to set up an interview.
- Answer your phone. We want to talk to you. If you are applying for jobs, employers are going to call with questions or to set up an interview so you need to answer your phone every time, even if you don't know the number. (We do not leave voicemail).
- Dress for success. (If you get an interview - wear casual but nice clothing. Nothing ripped or dirty.
- Have questions prepared - We want to know that you have done a bit of homework on the business and have some questions for us too. You are interviewing us as well! Look at our website or facebook page - what questions does it prompt for you about our business?
- Make us want to hire you! Why would you be the best choice for our team? What can you add that no one else can?
